Shifting from Disappointment
By Jackie Lapin
This year has been a difficult one for many. With the economy contracting, everyone is touched by disappointment in some way . . . whether it is the loss of a home, loss of a job, loss of freedom, loss of security, loss of peace of mind, loss of a dream or loss of someone you loved who could not cope.

The TreadDesk
www.treaddesk.com
by Emerson Sandow
A revolution is occurring in office environment work space. People formerly confined to their desks for 8 or more hours per day, to the detriment of their physical and psychological well-being, are being freed from this enslavement by a unique and brilliant idea - the TreadDesk! Working from a standing rather than sitting position, and walking on a treadmill rather than just standing produces tremendous benefits. The pace can be as slow as 1 mph, (ideal for typing and talking on the phone) and will produce incredible results in terms of calorie burning, cardiovascular health and muscular tone. Such walking-while-you-work is not intended as a workout, but rather as a way to realize simple health benefits - and avoid health detriments - just by a change of position.

My Grandmother's Memories: Stitching Together the Past
By Beth Livesay
We are out to lunch on Sunday afternoon. My grandmother, the family matriarch, sits with my father, like always. Her cane adorns the part of the table that borders the wall. I sit across from them sipping ice water.
We are always seated in the same arrangement, although the setting often changes. Sometimes it's an Italian restaurant and we each have layers of pasta on our plates, oozing with thick red or white sauces dotted with basil. Sometimes it's a burger place and we each have a burger on our plates that is as big as our heads, bulging with vegetables and extra meat, golden fries overflowing our plate. My grandma oftentimes orders a huge main course accompanied by an appetizer or dessert. Her meals are expensive and she ends up taking three quarters of it home.

Authentic Moments
Honesty
By Michaela McGrady
Love is frightening. I have never been more afraid than the day I decided to tell Jim that I loved him. We had been friends for five years and lived together for one year. During that year, we shared a single bed without ever being intimate. Our relationship consisted of long hours just being with each other, random trips to Vegas and flying kites in the park. We talked about everything except for how we felt about each other. I finally admitted to myself that I was in love. It was now time for me to share the realization with Jim. I had the entire moment planned out -- I would go to his house, we would get coffee, and amidst the chaos of the Starbucks on Ventura Boulevard, I would profess my feelings for him. Ideally he would grab me by the shoulders, look me in the eye and ask, "What took you so long?" Unfortunately, my noir-esque fantasy found itself unrealized.
